The World Environment Day was established by the General Assembly of the United Nations December 15, 1972 at the Stockholm Conference ( Sweden ) , whose central theme was the Human Environment .

The headquarters of the global celebrations of the date this year is the Caribbean island of Barbados, on behalf of the investment projects against climate change . Barbados included the Green Economy of the six concrete goals for its National Strategic Plan (2006-2025) and is committed to increasing its share of renewable energy to 29 % of all energy consumption in the island until 2029. This would cut about 283.5 million dollars of the total cost of electricity and reduce CO2 emissions by 4.5 million tons , according to the government . The tourist industry in Barbados, which contributes more than 15 % of the country's GDP , and its sugar industry , which contributes about 2 % , will be severely affected by climate change .

Climate Change

According to information from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP ) , sea levels rose 10-25 cm over the past 100 years due to global warming , and carbon dioxide - the main greenhouse gas causing - responsible for 85 % of the increase in Earth's temperature over the last 10 years.
