Uma frota baleeira da Islândia está zarpando para caçar e matar 150 baleias-fins, espécie ameaçada de extinção. No passado, quase conseguimos interromper a caça, mas agora podemos acabar com essa prática para sempre.
Enquanto os caçadores afiam seus arpões para a caça deste ano, o chefe da operação está tentando enviar a carne de baleia pescada no ano passado para o Japão. Mais de 1.700 toneladas estão prestes a atravessar a passagem de gelo entre a Rússia e o Pólo Norte. Mas se a pequena nação caribenha de São Cristóvão e Nevis – que emprestou sua bandeira para o navio – remover a bandeira, ele não poderá deixar o porto! Como o turismo é o pilar da economia do país, podemos colocar a sua reputação em jogo se ele estiver sob holofotes globais.
Temos apenas três dias antes do navio zarpar.

Toda indústria baleeira da Islândia é comandada por um só homem, Kristjan Loftsson, mas seus negócios estão indo de mal a pior. Se impedirmos que a carne de baleia chegue ao Japão, podemos fazer seus lucros afundarem! Outros países já removeram suas bandeiras de navios em resposta à pressão pública quanto a outras questões ambientais. Isso significa que a mesma estratégia pode funcionar no caso das baleias. Apesar da oposição generalizada, baleeiros japoneses planejam retomar a caça "científica" no Santuário Baleeiro Austral, e São Cristóvão e Nevis apoia a "investigação" do Japão na Comissão Baleeira Internacional. Se tirarmos o país caribenho da equação, poderemos dar um golpe mortal em ambos, baleeiros islandeses e japoneses, ao mesmo tempo!
Na Islândia, aumenta pressão a nível global e nacional para deter os baleeiros nacionais. Este pode ser um momento crucial para as baleias. Em decorrência de uma petição da Avaaz com um milhão de assinaturas em 2013, o governo holandês impediu o atracamento de navios islandeses carregados de carne de baleia nos portos do país. A whaling fleet is setting sail from Iceland to hunt and kill 150 whales purposes, endangered species. In the past, we can almost stop the hunting, but now we can stop this practice forever.
While hunters hone their harpoons for hunting this year, the head of the operation is trying to send the whale meat caught last year to Japan. More than 1,700 tons are about to cross the ice passage between Russia and the North Pole . But if the small Caribbean nation of Saint Kitts and Nevis - who lent his flag to the ship - remove the flag, he can not leave the harbor! All whaling industry in Iceland is controlled by one man, Kristjan Loftsson, but their businesses are going from bad to worse. If we prevent that whale meat to Japan arrives, you can sink your profits! Other countries have removed their ships flags in response to public pressure as other environmental issues. This means that the same strategy can work in the case of whales. All we need to do is create a scandal and cause a delay that hinder the transport of whale meat to Japan.
Despite widespread opposition, Japanese whalers plan to resume "scientific" whaling in the Southern Whaling Sanctuary, and Saint Kitts and Nevis supports the "investigation" of Japan at the International Whaling Commission. If we take the Caribbean country of the equation, we can give a deadly blow to both Icelandic and Japanese whalers at the same time!
In Iceland, pressure increases at global and national level to stop the national whalers. This can be a crucial time for the whales. Together we have the power to transform the International Whaling Commission in an International Commission of Whales Protection. We know that our campaigns work. As a result of a petition from Avaaz with one million signatures in 2013, the Dutch government prevented the docking of Icelandic vessels laden with whale meat in the country's ports. And in partnership with Greenpeace, our community has managed to make Germany give back a whale meat shipment to Iceland. Since then, the major shipping companies have announced that never again would carry whale meat. We are making profits increasingly difficult for this industry. Let's end it once and for all!
