Temos pelo corpo pelo menos 2,6 milhões de glândulas chamadas sudoríparas que são responsáveis pelo nosso suor. Essas glândulas são de dois tipos: as glândulas écrinas que são encontradas em todo o corpo, particularmente nas palmas das mãos, solas dos pés e testa. O produto da secreção destas glândulas é um líquido aquoso transparente, de gosto salgado e sem odor. Já as glândulas apócrinas localizadas principalmente nas axilas e na área anal-genital. A secreção produzida por estas glândulas é muito diferente do suor elaborado pelas glândulas écrinas, já que é menos abundante, leitoso ou opalescente e tem um odor mais intenso.
O que parece acontecer com os bebês é que quando nascem apesar de terem as glândulas écrinas, ainda não desenvolveram as glândulas apócrinas, aquelas que secretam um suor diferenciado, com cor e cheiro. As apócrinas começam a se desenvolver devagar e atingem seu ponto máximo na puberdade, quando os cheiros afloram. As secreções dessas glândulas ainda facilitam a ploriferação de bactérias que resultam em um odor fétido. Assim, você pode cheirar a axila de bebê sem medo, pois ela é tão cheirosa quanto o resto do corpo.
Outra razão para o cheirinho bom foi adquirida durante a evolução, como uma espécie de feromônio. Como os seres humanos têm cuidados parentais, ou seja, os pais cuidam dos filhos como acontece com vários mamíferos, o cheiro bom dos bebês pode funcionar como um estímulo para aproximar a mãe do filho. E quem nunca pegou um bebê no colo só pra ficar sentindo aquele cheirinho delicioso?
Os bebês não têm mau cheiro, porque eles não têm glândulas sudoríparas apócrinas.
