O último rinoceronte branco macho no mundo, chamado de Sudão, foi sacrificado nesta segunda-feira depois que veterinários constataram o agravamento de sua doença. A informação foi divulgada nesta terça-feira pela direção da reserva natural queniana de Ol Pejeta, onde o animal vivia desde 2009. “Sua doença piorou significativamente nas últimas 24 horas. Ele não conseguia se levantar e estava passando muito mal”, explicou a equipe da reserva, que trabalhou junto com especialistas do zoológico tcheco Dvur Kralove e o Serviço de Conservação da Fauna queniana (KWS).
Sudão se recuperou com sucesso no final do ano passado de uma infecção na sua pata direita, por causaa da sua idade avançada, mas no final de fevereiro, teve uma recaída que foi considerada “muito mais profunda”.
Desde então, os veterinários procuraram maneiras de curá-lo e até mesmo de perpetuar a espécie, mas as complicações de sua perna, combinadas com a idade do rinoceronte (45 anos) levararam à morte.
“Sudão será lembrado por sua vida memorável e incomum”, disse a reserva, explicando que na década de 1970 conseguiu sobreviver à extinção da sua espécie e foi transferido para o zoológico Dvur Kralove, na República Tcheca.
No final de sua vida, conseguiu retornar para a África, na reserva natural localizada em Laikipia, no centro-oeste do Quênia.
A reserva informou que conseguiu extrair “material genético” da criatura, o que “dá esperança para futuras tentativas de reproduzir a espécie de rinoceronte branco através de técnicas genéticas avançadas”.
Além dele, existem outras duas fêmeas vivas, ambas filhas do Sudão, também em Ol Pejeta, mas a fecundação artificial nunca foi tentada com rinocerontes.
