O primeiro santuário de elefantes da América Latina está prestes a se tornar realidade e você pode ajudar a financiar essa iniciativa. Uma antiga fazenda de gado de mil hectares, há cerca de 40 Km do Parque Nacional da Chapada dos Guimarães deverá abrigar o projeto, que está em campanha de crowdfunding no Kikante.
“A troco de algumas risadas e sorrisos, elefantes em cativeiro têm sua saúde e felicidade sacrificadas. Milhares desses animais extremamente inteligentes e sociáveis pagam um preço alto demais, vivendo uma vida sem nenhuma semelhança com as vidas que teriam na natureza”, explica a organização no site da campanha.
A ideia é que o santuário possa abrigar e tratar animais apreendidos e recolhidos, vítimas de maus tratos, tráfico ou usados em espetáculos circenses. “Felizmente, boa parte do mundo está abrindo os olhos para o fato de que os cativeiros atuais não atendem às necessidade físicas e psicológicas mais básicas dos elefantes”, dizem os membros da ONG Santuário de Elefantes Brasil, responsável pelo projeto.
A exibição de animais em circos é proibida em 11 estados brasileiros e em 50 cidades. A prática também é ilegal em El Salvador, Equador, Paraguai, Bolívia e Argentina. Além da área cercada equivalente a mil campos de futebol, o Santuário contará também com um galpão para servir de centro veterinário.

The idea is that the sanctuary can house and treat animals seized and collected, victims of ill-treatment, trafficking or used in circus shows. "Fortunately, much of the world is opening the eyes to the fact that current captives do not meet the most basic physical and psychological needs of elephants," say members of the NGO Elephants Sanctuary Brazil, responsible for the project.
The exhibition of animals in circuses is prohibited in 11 Brazilian states and 50 cities. The practice is also illegal in El Salvador, Ecuador, Paraguay, Bolivia and Argentina. In addition to the fenced area equivalent to a thousand soccer fields, the Sanctuary will also have a shed to serve as a veterinary center.
