Most of you know that two Greenpeace activists were arrested by the police last Wednesday. This is because they’ve joined the people of Mahan in their fight to save their forests, homes and livelihoods. They have now been released but the fight isn’t over yet!
This was the latest in a series of outrageous attempts designed to silence criticism against the proposed coal mine, discredit the work that Greenpeace does and intimidate the people of Mahan. Starting with the SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation) suit [1], then the IB report [2] and finally the two midnight arrest of activists, the crackdown continues. Your contribution can further this fight to save the forests of Mahan!
The work that Greenpeace does is made possible by donations from individual supporters like you. We do not accept money from government or corporates. It was your support along with the pressure from the people of Mahan that ensured that the last Gram Sabha was declared invalid. More repression is sure to follow as the companies try and suppress any dissent before the Gram Sabha due to be held between Aug 16 and 22.
However, we refuse to be silenced! We live in the largest democracy in the world where each Indian citizen is entitled to the freedom of free speech and expression. We need your support to ensure that the Gram Sabha is held in a free and fair manner.
