A Floresta da Tijuca no Rio de Janeiro é considerada a maior floresta urbana do mundo!
Tudo começou na época do segundo reinado, quando se tornou patente que o desmatamento causado pelas fazenda de café, estava prejudicando o abastecimento de água potável do Rio de Janeiro, a então capital do Império.
Em 1861, o rei Don Pedro I, preocupado com essa falta de água que afetava a cidade, mandou reflorestar uma enorme área do Rio de Janeiro.
Em treze anos foram plantadas 100.000 mudas, principalmente espécies nativas da Mata Atlântica.
Trata-se portanto de uma floresta secundária, artificial e urbana, que hoje tem três grandes conjuntos de matas, fazendo fronteira com os bairros da Tijuca, Botafogo, Jardim Botânico, Gávea, São Conrado, Barra da Tijuca, Jacarepaguá, Grajaú, Vila Isabel, Rio Comprido e Laranjeiras.
A Floresta da Tijuca é uma importante área de lazer para a cidade do Rio de Janeiro, com trilhas, cachoeiras, espaços para pratica de vários tipos de esporte, praças com brinquedos para crianças.
Um local de incomparável beleza, possibilitando a integração harmoniosa entre o homem e a natureza, graças também ás visitas e excursões que a administração do Parque organiza, tendo como objetivo principal a educação ambiental de crianças e adultos.

The Tijuca Forest in Rio de Janeiro is considered the largest urban forest in the world!
It all started at the time of the second reign, when it became clear that the deforestation caused by coffee farm, was damaging the supply of drinking water from the Rio de Janeiro, the then capital of the Empire.
