O som da letra “S” em WhatsApp é de “S” mesmo; não é de “Z”. Trocar o som de “S” pelo de “Z” é alteração feita com muita frequência pelo aluno brasileiro que estuda inglês. O fenômeno acontece com o “S” em posição inicial, como em smile, small e smart, que não são pronunciadas /iz-maiú/, /iz-móu/ e /iz-márti/, e também em posição intermediária, como em case, base, e gasoline, que não são pronunciadas /kêi-zi/, /bêi-zi/ e /gué-zolíni/. Vogal de apoio
Não existe uma letra “I” entre o “T” e o “S” em WhatsApp. Por que colocamos um “I” nesta posição sem perceber? Como não temos nenhuma palavra na língua portuguesa com a sequência t-s-a, temos a tendência natural de recorrermos a uma vogal para que que falemos a palavra com mais facilidade. O nome WhatsApp foi escolhido pelos criadores da empresa por conta da semelhança fonética com a expressão What’s up?, usada informalmente para se iniciar uma conversa. Sua tradução é algo como “E aí?”, “E aí, tudo bem?”, “Beleza?” ou qualquer outra expressão sinônima. Não raro, ela aparece grafada Wassup?, Wusup?, Tsup? e Sup?, meras reproduções gráficas da fala informal. Qualquer semelhança com “zap zap” não é coincidência!
