O Dia Internacional da Mulher, celebrado em 8 de março, tem como origem as manifestações das mulheres russas por melhores condições de vida e trabalho e contra a entrada da Rússia czarista na Primeira Guerra Mundial. Essas manifestações marcaram o início da Revolução de 1917. Entretanto a ideia de celebrar um dia da mulher já havia surgido desde os primeiros anos do século XX, nos Estados Unidos e na Europa, no contexto das lutas de mulheres por melhores condições de vida e trabalho, bem como pelo direito de voto. O Dia Internacional das Mulheres e a data de 8 de março são comumente associados a dois fatos históricos que teriam dado origem à comemoração. O primeiro deles seria uma manifestação das operárias do setor têxtil novaiorquino ocorrida em 8 de março de 1857 (segundo outras versões em 1908). O outro acontecimento é o incêndio de uma fábrica têxtil ocorrido na mesma data e na mesma cidade. Não existe consenso entre a historiografia para esses dois fatos, nem sequer sobre as datas, o que gerou mitos sobre esses acontecimentos.

International Women's Day on March 8, has its origin manifestations of Russian women for better conditions of life and work and the entry in the Russian tsarist World War.
