O organization name came by chance. On the occasion of the premiere of the organization, to prevent an American nuclear test in the Aleutian Islands, the activists had the idea to make and sell a button to help raise funds for the trip. It should contain the green (green) and peace (peace), that contained in two separate words flags, hoisted on board the vessel of the organization, previously known as "Do not Make a Wave Committee" (Do not Make a Wave Committee). The words had been thought to express the idea of pacifism and defense of the environment, however, seen on the flag, seemed too big to fit on a button. So were joined, thus rising the greenpeace expression, which became the name adopted by the organization.
